Nesting boxes and hollows

Kersbrook Landcare Group teamed up with Conservation Volunteers in 2020 to build much needed nesting boxes for both the Kangaroo Island fire scar and the Cudlee creek area. Pallet loads of nest boxes were sent to Kangaroo Island and distributed to several local conservation groups for installation.

Excerpt from Adelaide Hills Council. Hills Voice, March 2020:

Many native fauna species are in need of a new home after the Cudlee Creek Bushfire and Council has been working with the Kersbrook Landcare Group to create safe spaces for these critters. Mature eucalypt trees often possess hollow branches or trunks which become home to native animals for nesting and den sites. Small hollows can be suitable for bats, lizards and small birds and large hollows are commonly occupied by Cockatoos, Brush-tailed Possums or Owls. The Kersbrook Landcare group approached Council with a request to retrieve the hollow wood from the burnt and cleared trees removed from the roadside. Council staff were able to assist the group in retrieving a trailer load of valuable hollows from stockpile sites across the district. These are now being relocated back into the burn area to enhance habitat and encourage the return of native species.
